Technical calcium carbide ( ) is produced in electric arc furnaces. The chemical reaction between the raw materials, burnt lime and coke takes place between 2,000 and 2,200°C in the electric arc. The calcium carbide is tapped into ingot molds. After cooling, the solidified blocks are crushed and processed.
Technical calcium carbide consists of approx. 80% and mostly CaO. In many cases it is used as the starting product for the production of acetylene, which is chemically processed into polymers or used for welding purposes.
Its conversion to calcium cyanamide for use as special fertilizer or as a base material for cyanamide chemistry is a further field of application.
